[Edward:]
"No." I shook my head. "I don't have a job. Not many places want to hire a homeless teenager." I shrugged. I wondered briefly why he had asked me if I had a job; why would he care? I mean, it's not like he should care. But, he was in the Fifty . . . Maybe he just didn't like the idea of a kid running around with nothing better to do all day then cause trouble.

Mace had to laugh. It wasn't something you laughed about, but the way Edward said it brought back all the memories of Mace at Edwards age. Same situation, wondering the streets with a couple of good friends. "I remember those days." Man, he sounded so old. "I lived the same way until I was eighteen. Then I joined the Underground and later the Fifty."

[Edward:]
"Why'd you join a side? I mean, a lot of people just stay neutral. What's the point in picking a side when all you do is fight? It seems to make more sense to just stay out of the whole issue and save yourself a lot of trouble if you don't pick." I sighed; that probably hadn't made much sense. I tended not to think before I spoke, and stuff just came out in whatever order my thoughts were in. Hopefully he understood some of that.

"Yeah, me an my gang were neutral, but then they were captured." Mace closed his eyes for a second. "All of them were taken. I tried to help them, but humans can't do a lot sometimes." He shook himself. "I chose to join up because I wanted to save others like my friends. I wanted to help."

[Edward:]
I stopped and stared at the guy. He was human? I realised I was gawking and shook myself, trying to focus. "I'm sorry." That probably wasn't the best answer, but it was all I could come up with at the moment. My brain was whirling at a million miles an hour, wondering how a human would be able to keep up with a mutant and avoid being killed when they were attacked by one.
I ran my hand through my hair, trying to get my thoughts in order. "That makes sense. I guess I see why you picked a side." 'But that reason doesn't really work for me; I don't have any friends,' I added silently.
